Subleading Isgur-Wise form factor [xi][sub 3]([ital v][center dot][ital v][prime]) and its implications for the decays [ital [bar B]][r arrow][ital D][sup (*)][ital l][bar [nu]]

We calculate, in the framework of QCD sum rules and to next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, the universal function [xi][sub 3]([ital v][center dot][ital v][prime]) which appears at 1/[ital m][sub [ital Q]] in the heavy quark expansion of meson weak decay form factors. We find that radiative corrections of order [alpha][sub [ital s]] are very important. Over the kinematic range accessible in semileptonic decays, [xi][sub 3]([ital v][center dot][ital v][prime]) is proportional to the leading-order Isgur-Wise function [xi]([ital v][center dot][ital v][prime]) to very good accuracy. Taking into account all sources of uncertainty we estimate [xi][sub 3]/[xi]=(0.6[plus minus]0.2). This reduces the theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] from [ital [bar B]][r arrow][ital Dl][bar [nu]] transitions. A measurement of the form factor ratio [ital A][sub 2]/[ital A][sub 1] in [ital [bar B]][r arrow][ital D][sup *][ital l][bar [nu]] decays can be used to test our prediction.
