Transformation toughening behavior in ceramics

The transformation of tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/ to the monoclinic phase can be used to increase the fracture toughness of zirconia bearing ceramics to approximately 20 MPa ..sqrt..m. The attainment of high toughness by transformation toughening is described and experimentally verified in terms of the tetragonal phase stability, transformation zone size, and critical transformation stress for ZrO/sub 2/ systems with selected compositions and microstructures.
