It has been found that upon illumination of aqueous-ethanolic solutions of the heteropoly acids (HPA) H/sub 3/(PMo/sub 12/O/sub 40/) (I), H/sub 4/(SiMo/sub 12/O/sub 40/) (II), H/sub 3/(PW/sub 12/O/sub 40/) (III), and H/sub 4/(SiW/sub 12/O/sub 40/) (IV) with light of lambda < 400 nm, a photocatalytic liberation of hydrogen occurs. It has been found that the liberation of hydrogen is preceded by successive photoreduction of HPA I by 2, 4, and 6 electrons, of HPA II by 2 and 4 electrons, and of HPA III-IV by 1 and 2 electrons, while the liberation of hydrogen results from a spontaneous reoxidation of the most extensively reduced forms of the HPA.
