Research on a wood-burning gas turbine

Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5282910
A wood burning gas turbine research apparatus was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the filter system in preventing turbine blade erosion. Green wood pulverized to pass a half inch screen was used. A wood fueled gas turbine with pressurized fluidized coal burning bed and a large single cyclone filter is shown schematically. The burner arrangement is also explained schematically. Results showed no erosion of the turbine blade. The vertical chamber suffered intense burning, however, so specified modifications were made. A wood feed auger was also added to provide finer control of the wood feed. In conclusion, the economic potential for wood for power generation under the PURPA law is excellent where mill waste is available.
