Vitrification of high-level alumina nuclear waste

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/5278312· OSTI ID:5278312
Borosilicate and borophosphate glass compositions have been developed to vitrify simulated high-alumina calcined nuclear defense waste. The effects of the alkali (Li/sub 2/O,Na/sub 2/O) to borate ratio and the Li/sub 2/O to Na/sub 2/O ratio on the glass melt viscosity and leach resistance were measured. The effects on the same properties of substituting CaO and P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ for SiO/sub 2/ and of substituting SiO/sub 2/, P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and CuO for B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were measured in the borosilicate and borophosphate glass, respectively.
