Investigations of the cyclone washing of fine coal in water
Preliminary fine coal washing tests with hydrocyclones showed that an effective elimination of mineral matter was indeed possible over a wide range of sizes. Previous attempts to explain this washing effect emphasized either the differential acceleration of particles in the central cyclone vortex, or the stratification of solids according to density along the cyclone wall. In the present study emphasis was placed on the analysis of the interactions of various operating variables in this cyclone process. The sizeable amount of experimental data was evaluated by correlation and multiple regression analyses. It was found that the flow ratio of the pulp in the vortex finder and apex discharges is the predominant variable for the separation. Next in importance for the separation is the length of the vortex finder.
