Longitudinal waves are analyzed in a low-pressure plasma in an external magnetic field and in the alternating electric and magnetic fields of a large-amplitude fast magnetosonic wave. The magnetosonic wave has a frequency of the order of the ion cyclotron frequency and is propagating nearly across the constant magnetic field. In this situation it is sufficient to consider the effect of the wave's magnetic field on the electrons only. A general dispersion relation is derived to describe parametric effects in such a plasma. The magnetic field of the pump wave causes pronounced changes in the dispersion properties of longitudinal waves of the plasma with a frequency of the order of the ion cyclotron frequency if the displacement of the electrons by the wave magnetic field is of the order of the transverse wavelength. A detailed study is made of the parametric excitation of electron sound. If the wave has weak magnetic field that can change the parametric-resonance conditions, but the maximum growth rate does not change. It is also possible that the wave growth will be suppressed.
