This paper reports on measurements of the performance and emissions characteristics of a small prechamber type diesel engine modified for dual fuel operation. For dual fueling, a major portion of the fuel energy is provided by natural gas that is mixed with the intake air, and ignition is achieved by the injection of a pilot charge of diesel fuel. Thermal efficiencies measured for dual fueling were similar to those for straight diesel fueling. No{sub x} concentrations were lower for dual fueling at low loads, but higher at full load. CO concentrations were higher, and So{sub 2} concentrations and smoke were lower for dual fueling at all conditions.
