Continuing our study of the properties of the P-halo ylides, we have studied their reactions with ketones, which, as we have shown, go as (2 + 2)-cyclo-addition with the formation of the 2-halo-1,2lambda/sup 5/-oxaphosphetanes. In the PMR spectra of the compounds which contain an asymmetric C/sup 4/ carbon atom, the authors observe distinct nonequivalence of the protons of CH/sup a/H/sup b/ in the four-membered ring with a considerable distancing of the signals of H/sup a/ and H/sup b/ from one another. As a result of the magnetic nonequivalence of the protons of the methylene group in these compounds geminal spin-spin interaction arises between them. Each of the signals of CH/sup a/ and CH/sup b/ is a doublet of doublets with a coupling constant on account of the phosphorus nucleus of /sup 2/J/sub PH/ 20-22 Hz and a geminal coupling constant /sup 2/J/sub HH/ of 16-17 Hz. Certain other groups are magnetically nonequivalent, in particular the tery-butyl groups. The asymmetrically substituted phosphorus atom in the compounds also determines the magnetic nonequivalence of the two CF/sub 3/ groups in the /sup 19/F NMR spectrum; the signal of each is split into a quartet.
