A conductively cooled laser diode array is described comprising: (a) flat ceramic plates made substantially from heat conducting beryllium oxide; (b) electrically conductive material applied to a portion of the plates; (c) laser diodes affixed directly to the plates and electrically connected to the electrically conductive material on the plates; and (d) clamping means for assembling a stack of the plates into the conductively cooled laser diode array wherein the plates are stacked immediately adjacent to each other and form a heat path for dissipating heat produced by the laser diodes.
