On September 19, 1979, the subcommittee on Energy Research and Production of the Committee on Science and Technology held congressional hearings to discuss plans for improved safety of Nuclear Power Plants following the Three Mile Island (TMI) accident. As a result of the TMI accident, the utilities are undertaking new comprehensive technical and institutional initiatives for improved safety and reliability in the operation and maintenance of nuclear powerplants. Some of these initiatives include the establishment of a nuclear safety analysis center, an institute for nuclear power operations, and a mutual insurance program.
