Wet venturi doubles as an SO/sub 2/ scrubber

Development work at the Four Corners powerplant in New Mexico has shown that a venturi scrubber, originally installed for particulate removal only, can be retrofitted to remove enough SO/sub 2/ to comply with environmental strictures. All that is needed is a lime recirculation loop operated at an optimized pH that inhibits formation of scaling and corrosive compounds, while enhancing absorption of SO/sub 2/. A lime slurry is injected into the lower portion of the venturi to neutralize the scrubbing solution. A controlled fraction of this stream is then recycled to the upper portion of the venturi throat to contact the incoming flue gas. The lime addition raises the pH of the scrubbing liquor.
