Surface chemistry of activated hydrodesulfurization catalysts by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
The XPS spectra of unsulfided and sulfided catalyst containing 12-30% molybdenum trioxide and 0-6% cobalt oxide on alumina or carbon showed that the cobalt is reduced by sulfiding with hydrogen/hydrogen sulfide at 400/sup 0/C, probably to the zero-valent state; no cobalt sulfide was observed. A bulk cobalt molybdate sample treated under the same sulfiding conditions as the supported catalysts, showed the expected Co/sub 9/S/sub 8/ formation. On alumina supports, part of the cobalt formed CoAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/, in amounts that depended on the temperature of calcining prior to sulfiding; cobalt bound as aluminate was neither sulfided nor reduced. The differences between the supported and unsupported catalysts are attributed to the dispersion.
