Conversion of 0.12% dibenzothiophene in n-hexadecane at 300/sup 0/C and 104 atm on sulfided American Cyanamid HDS 16A catalyst (4.4%Co, 7.5% Mo) increased by 10% in the first 10-20 hr and decreased after a step change in the feed rate from 128 to 730 cc/hr g catalyst and continued to decrease for 50 hr. Further tests suggested that the increased space velocity reduced the product H/sub 2/S concentration which resulted in a decreased number of catalytic sites, and that the steady-state activity depended on the reactor startup procedure and probably also on the presulfiding procedure. Assuming that the catalyst consists of MoS/sub 2/ and Co/sub 9/S/sub 8/ on the alumina surface and that the active sites are molybdenum(III) ions located next to cobalt(II) ions intercalated at the edges of MoS/sub 2/ crystallites, the sulfur-deficient structures may contain CoMo/sub 2/S/sub 4/.
