The details of a full-scale test of solids reduction and energy conversion from the cocombustion of sludge and refuse derived fuel under oxygen-rich and oxygen-starved conditions in a multiple-hearth furnace are presented. Application of the test results to a similar energy recovery system in a 1.8-m/sup 3//s (40-mgd) water reclamation plant are discussed with a review of the consequent land disposal, water pollution, air pollution, and economic aspects of the project.
