Knowledge of apex seal temperature, gas pressure, combustion pressure, and other operating parameters is essential to further development of the rotary combustion engine. A novel telemetry transmission system was devised to investigate rotary engine operation. The choice of telemetry as the data link between the rotor-based tranducers and the stationary side housing limited the performance of the measuring system. The building of a workable system required consideration and/or improvement of each separate element. A circular transmitter was located inside a metal cylinder at one rotor-apex oil cavity. To be decoded properly in the receiver the transducer signal input to the transmitter could vary from 0 to 5 mv. The transmitter converts the input signal into a 2 kHz square wave with an amplitude equal to the input signal voltage. This square wave, with amplitude proportional to the transducer signal, is amplified and used to modulate a radio-frequency oscillator about a 100 MHz carrier frequency. The positive and negative square wave voltages generate radio frequencies at 15 kHz/mv above and below the carrier frequency. A buffer amplifier is included in the transmitter to mitigate frequency modulation produced by the variation in proximity of the transmitter to its metal enclosure.
