We have studied the flux line lattice in YNi{sub 2}B {sub 2}C and LuNi{sub 2}B {sub 2}C , the nonmagnetic end members of the borocarbide superconductors using small angle neutron scattering and transport. For fields, {bold H}{parallel}{bold c} , we find a square symmetric lattice which disorders rapidly above H/H{sub c2}{approximately}0.2 , well below the {open_quotes}peak effect{close_quotes} at H/H{sub c2}=0.9 . The results for H/H{sub c2}{lt}0.2 can be understood within the collective pinning model, and are controlled by the tilt modulus c{sub 44} . For H/H{sub c2}{gt}0.2 , the disordering appears to be associated with the field dependence of the shear modulus, c{sub 66} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
