Detector for dimuons produced in the relativistic heavy ion collider

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5270263

The use of dimuons as a probe of the quark-gluon plasma is explored. Expected rates and backgrounds in the range of dimuon masses from 0.5 to 4.0 GeV/c/sup 2/ are presented. A conceptual design is developed for a detector with sufficient resolution and background rejection to observe dimuons in high multiplicity collisions expected at RHIC. Machine requirements and a cost estimate for the detector are also presented.
