This paper reports on an evaluation of the use of pocket ionization chambers (PCs) that was conducted at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry and Sequoyah Nuclear Plants to identify system-based causes of discrepancies between TLDs and PCs. THe evaluation showed that a large number of off-scale PC investigations were being preformed as a result of unnecessary use of PCs and that improvements in programs practices and recommendations for improvement are presented that may be applicable to other radiation protection programs in which large numbers of personnel are monitored with both pocket ionization chambers and other official dosimeters.
