The intensity of the high-energy heavy ion beam, extracted from the heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) at the GSI, Darmstadt, is determined with three types of detectors: scintillator counters, ionisation chambers (ICs), and secondary electron monitors (SEMs). The accuracy of the ICs, compared to a general formula, is about 25{percent}; for the SEMs it is within a factor of two. Intensity limits for the IC are measured. A SQUID-based current comparator is in preparation for an absolute determination of the primary ion current. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
