High temperature lubricating process
It has been difficult to provide adaquate lubrication for load bearing, engine components when such engines are operating in excess of about 475/sup 0/ C. The present invention is a process for providing a solid lubricant on a load bearing, solid surface, such as in an engine being operated at temperatures in excess of about 475/sup 0/ C. The process comprises contacting and maintaining steps. A gas phase is provided which includes at least one component reactable in a temperature dependent reaction to form a solid lubricant. The gas phase is contacted with the load bearing surface. The load bearing surface is maintained at a temperature which causes reaction of the gas phase component and the formation of the solid lubricant. The solid lubricant is formed directly on the load bearing surface. The method is particularly suitable for use with ceramic engines.
