Integrating the ALARA and RWP processes

In this paper a system for integrating ALARA reviews into the normal Radiation Work Permit (RWP) issuing process is described. The system places considerable emphasis on anticipating the radiological conditions that will exist during performance of work and on effective coordination between radiation protection technicians and job supervisors. The integrated RWP/ALARA system is based on the belief that the RWP issuing process, with its inherent reviews and exposure limiting decisions, constitutes an adequate ALARA review for most jobs. Formal, separate ALARA reviews are then reserved for those situations with the greatest potential for exposure savings.
