Pacific Northwest Laboratories is conducting a project for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to assess the effects of overtime, staffing levels, and shift schedules on alertness and performance for both reactor operators and maintenance personnel in nuclear power plants. The effects will be tested using two approaches: statistical tests using cross-sectional data from the nuclear industry and a case study with a nuclear utility. In a previous phase of this project, information on these issues was collected from nonnuclear industries.
