Several strains of bacteria were examined for ability to utilize oil with and without mercury added to the culture medium. The majority of the oil-utilizing bacterial strains had been isolated from an oil-contaminated creek in Baltimore Harbor of the Chesapeake Bay. Relatively low concentrations of mercury inhibited the utilization of oil by the strains of bacteria examined in this study.
