The main consequences of the existence of an anisotropic order parameter {ital within} {ital the} {ital basal} {ital planes} in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} are analyzed. It is shown that the superconducting condensate is sensitive to the different orthorhombic domains of the underlying crystal lattice. Hence, boundaries influence the electromagnetic properties in the superconducting state. Flux pinning, critical currents, and deflection of supercurrents by twin boundaries are analyzed semiphenomenologically.
