Novel approach to external standardization in liquid scintillation counting

Sample preparation and choice of scintillation cocktail are important considerations in liquid scintillation counting applications. Because there are many different types of radiolabeled samples and scintillation cocktails, preparation of closely related samples becomes difficult since different sample-cocktail combinations can produce different quenching effects. A liquid scintillation counting technique for monitoring the degree of cocktail quench has been developed using a Packard Tri-Carb Spectralyzer series 2000CA Liquid Scintillation Analyzer. The capability of energy spectrum analysis of liquid scintillation instrumentation enabled the exploration and development of an improved external standard quench monitoring technique and other advanced applications in liquid scintillation counting.
