Air pollution means big dollar losses to growers

Agricultural losses up to $500 million per year are being caused by increasing air pollution levels. In New Jersey, air pollution injuries over 57 different crops, with leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach being hardest hit. Air pollution has become the worst single problem in northern Jersey. The Connecticut cigar wrapper industry is threatened by pollution; $5 million worth of tobacco was destroyed in one weekend. The entire truck farming economy is threaten or destroyed around Los Angeles. And in New York and Delaware, where major vegetable areas are located close to big industrial centers, it's the same story - air pollution is destroying crops and running up big dollar losses to growers. One of the major concerns today of government, industry, and the private citizen is environmental quality. The tonnage of air pollutants released into the air now is 133 million tons annually. Agricultural scientists also are alarmed with the increasing rate of air pollution emission that is causing detrimental changes in the agricultural ecology.
