beta. -. gamma. angular correlations in /sup 20/Na and /sup 20/F beta decay

The ..beta..-..gamma.. angular correlations for the decay of /sup 20/Na and /sup 20/F to the 1.633 MeV state of /sup 20/Ne have been measured using a twenty-detector system of cylindrical symmetry. /sup 20/Na was produced by the /sup 20/Ne(p,n)/sup 20/Na reaction using a 19 MeV proton beam, and /sup 20/F was produced by the reaction /sup 19/F(d,p)/sup 20/F using SF/sub 6/ gas and 4 MeV deuterons. The activated gasses were continuously transferred, through a thin capillary, from the target cell into the source cell in the center of the correlation apparatus. Two ..gamma.. detectors and 16 ..beta.. detector telescopes allowed for the simultaneous measurements of ..beta..-..gamma.. coincidences at 0/sup 0/, 25/sup 0/, 45/sup 0/, 65/sup 0/, 90/sup 0/, 115/sup 0/, 135/sup 0/, 155/sup 0/, and 180/sup 0/, and at their symmetric counterparts with respect to the 0/sup 0/--180/sup 0/ direction. The ..beta..-..gamma.. correlation was also measured for the first-forbidden ..beta../sup -/ decay of /sup 124/Sb, in order to confirm the computed attenuation in measured anisotropy caused by the finite geometry of the detectors and the source cell. The correlation function is denoted by W/sub +- /(theta/sub ..beta../..sqrt../sub ..gamma../) = 1+..cap alpha../sub +- /(E)(pE)/sup 2/cos/sup 2/theta/sub ..beta../..sqrt../sub ..gamma../. The /sup 0/ subscripts refer to electron or positron decay, p is the beta momentum, and E is the beta total energy in MeV. The present result for /sup 20/Na(..beta..-..gamma..) correlation is ..cap alpha sqrt..(E) = (-4.45 +- 0.31) x 10/sup -3/E+(1.87 +- 0.42) x 10/sup -4/E/sup 2/.
