We are establishing a Nuclear Criticality Information System (NCIS) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This system is intended to serve personnel responsible for safe storage, transport, and handling of fissile materials and those concerned with the evaluation and analysis of nuclear, critical experiments. Public concern for nuclear safety provides the incentive for improved access to nuclear safety information. NCIS is being developed to become a focal point for information on nuclear safety by bringing together relevant resources and data on safety, standards, guidelines and regulations, descriptive information, and numeric data. NCIS is available as a prototype for interactive use from remote terminals by dialup to the Technology Information System (TIS). NCIS information resources will include data required to validate computer programs and nuclear reaction rates used in establishing safe handling criteria for fissile materials outside of nuclear reactors. Presently online is a bibliography of 1067 reports on critical measurements, a compilation of papers from the transactions of the American Nuclear Society, an "International Directory of Nuclear Criticality Safety Personnel," and numerical descriptions of about 150 critical experiments contributed by the Radiation Safety Information Center at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A general, structured index to the nuclear criticality literature is in preparation. This report describes the present status and plans for the development of NCIS. TIS gives its users the ability to search interactively for information and data. In addition, it offers personal database management, interactive modeling, interactive color graphics, electronic communications, and automated access to other information centers. NCIS will be available via TIS to users via telephone dialup, over the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) computer network, and over the international TYMNET.
