Title: Surface mining and fish/wildlife needs in the eastern United States

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5261391

The Eastern Energy and Land Use Team, in cooperation with West Virginia University, held a symposium, December 3-6, 1978, on Surface Mining and Fish/Wildlife Needs in the Eastern United States. The symposium focused on major factors affecting fish and wildlife populations potentially impacted by surface mining in the eastern US. The thrust of the discussions was how to benefit these resources through effective planning and analysis of mineral mining disturbances on land and water habitats. Responses of biota to various treatments, reclamation methods for fish and wildlife involving best technologies currently available, and opportunities for fish and wildlife on mined lands, were primary concerns of the discussions. Panel sessions on Roles and Responsibilities: PL 95-87 and Lands Unsuitable for Mining, and major overviews of the status of eastern mineral mining developments, revealed how key actors in mineral development activities planned to respond to provisions of PL 95-87. This Proceedings Addendum contains those missing papers from the meeting. The Keynote, welcoming remarks and the entire panel discussions are reproduced here for continuity and completeness.
