Health assessment for Main Street Well Field, Elkhart, Indiana, Region 5. CERCLIS No. IND980794358. Preliminary report

The Main Street Well Field is listed on the National Priorities List. The 10-acre site is located in Elkhart (Elkhart County) in north central Indiana. Preliminary sampling results have identified trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,2-dichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1 dichloroethane in residential and municipal wells. Sampling information has consistently demonstrated TCE concentrations in the 5 ppb range. The site is considered to be of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health caused by the possibility of human exposure to hazardous substances. Potential human exposure pathways include ingestion of and direct contact with soil, sediment, surface water, and ground water. Moreover, other possible human exposure can occur through the ingestion of fish, waterfowl, and vegetables that bioaccumulate contaminants.
