A team of automotive and technology companies has been assembled to produce two advanced hybrid cars. The hybrid automobile's 40-hp electric motor and 80-hp gasoline engine will operate separately or in parallel, depending upon the driving speed. A microcomputer will control overall vehicle operation. The baseline vehicle selected by General Electric (G.E.) will be a mid-size, 4-door sedan. Although heavier than its conventional counterpart, the dual-propulsion-system car is expected to require 5% less total energy to operate. The car's batteries may be recharged by regenerative braking, by the gasoline engine, or by wall-plug electricity. Major subcontractors to G.E. are listed. 1 figure. (SAC)
