Mechanical testing and microscopic analysis of structure of extruded powder aluminum

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5256964
The mechanical properties and structure of extruded powder aluminum were studied so that failure mechanisms could be determined. Extruded powder aluminum specimens were mechanically tested at elevated temperature in tension and compression and were then sectioned, polished, and viewed microscopically to examine changes in the powder metal. Quantitative metallography was used to show changes produced in the laminar powder structure. The void content of the material increased with greater axial elongation in the tension tests and decreased with increasing levels of compression. 6 refs., 6 figs.
