Measurement of Xe-133, C-14, And Tritium in Air and I-131 in Vegetation and Milk Around the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station
- Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), Idaho Falls, ID (United States)
The objective of this program was to evaluate the air-grass-cow-milk model for predicting the I-131 dose from normal operations at an actual LWR. The Quad Cities Nuclear Station was selected as the candidate site and measurements were made for a three month period. The station gaseous effluent release rate was determined for I-131, Xe-133, Kr-85, C-14, and H-3. The chemical species of the released iodine and the oxidization state of the released C-14 and H-3 were determined. In the environment, measurements were made of the I-131 concentration in air at five sites. At two of these sites, determinations were made of the I-131 concentrations in vegetation, milk, and precipitation and the Xe-133, C-14, and H-3 concentrations in air. Meteorological data was obtained from the station meteorological tower, and from small towers at two of the environmental sampling locations. Calculations of the predicted effluent plume dispersion and deposition were made using the methodology cited in Regulatory Guide 1.111.
