The assessment of human exposure to a contaminant requires the measurement and prioritization of the levels in each pathway. This is an integral part of the data required for hazard assessments and/or epidemiological analyses. This presentation will describe an approach for determining total exposure. It will use the design considerations, and first phase results of a project on the combustion product Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). A 2-wk microenvironmental study conducted in January-February 1987 is examined, and the levels of B(a)P found in indoor air, outdoor air, water, soil, and food compared. The mass of PM-10 and the cyclohexene extractable organics were measured for the indoor and outdoor air samples, and these are compared for indoor-outdoor relationships. The study is located in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, which is a small city that contains a metal pipe fabrication plant. This is the suspected major outdoor air source of BaP. Three PM-10 outdoor samples are located in residential areas surrounding the plant. In addition, 10 homes are sampled for PM-10 and BaP. Eight are <0.7 km from the plant and two are outdoor pollution controls. Some of these homes have sources of combustion indoors (e.g., coal stoves). Food samples from family meals were acquired each day, water samples were taken twice each week, and soil and snow samples were acquired from the grounds around each home. The plans for the second phase of personal monitoring are discussed. Preliminary approaches to the BaP exposure assessment are examined using the Phillipsburg microenvironmental data.
