A process is described for the gasification of a solid carbonaceous feed material by an endothermic gasification reaction. The solid carbonaceous material in particle form is mixed with particles of solid inert heat carrier material at a temperature substantially in excess of the temperature required for the gasification reaction. A bed of the resultant mixture of solids is maintained in a gasification zone and a gaseous reactant is passed through the bed to effect endothermic gasification of the solid carbonaceous material. Resulting gases are withdrawn from the gasification zone. Ungasified residue is discharged from the carbonaceous material and mixed with the heat carrier material from the gasification zone.
