Isotopic composition of carbonate in EETA 79001 and its relation to parent body volatiles

Journal Article · · Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta; (USA)
Calcite, a probably extraterrestrial weathering product in the shergottite EETA 79001, has {delta}{sup 13}C = +9.7{per thousand} and {delta}{sup 18}O = +21.0{per thousand}. In order to account for the large excess of {sup 18}O relative to the silicate substrate ({delta}{sup 18}O = +4.2{per thousand}), a parent body surface reservoir containing both water and carbon dioxide is required. The inferred H{sub 2}O/CO{sub 2} ratio is consistent with estimates for the degassed reservoir on Mars.
