Ground-based Fabry-Perot observations of neutral and ionic atoms and molecules of comet Halley

From November 1985 through May 1986 we conducted an extensive series of observations of comet Halley using the Wisconsin 150mm dual etalon Fabry-Perot spectrometer coupled to the 32 inch west auxiliary of the McMath Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak, Arizona. High spectral resolution (0.2 {angstrom}) scans and images were obtained. Spatial images of comet Halley in (OI)6300 {angstrom} emission have been used to deduce the distribution of cometary O({sup 1}D). The 10 kms{sup {minus}1} bandpass of the system allowed the distribution to be measured with little contamination from airglow (OI)6300 and cometary NH{sub 2} lines in the nearby spectrum. The results were modeled to provide photodestruction lifetimes for cometary H{sub 2}O and OH, the predominant parents of O({sup 1}D).
