Improved catalysts for coal liquefaction. Quarterly report No. 8, June 1-August 31, 1986

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5252984
This report contains the results of batch reactor experiments on catalysts prepared from silica, alumina, carbon, titania, magnesia, titania-alumina and magnesia-alumina supports. An experimental design procedure has been implemented to identify the important variables in the catalyst preparations, and optimization has identified several catalysts of sufficient interest to merit further study in the continuous unit. More complete analytical results are now available for the continuous unit runs BMC11, BMC12, MC02 and MC03 which were discussed in the previous report, and the run summaries are updated in the present report. In addition, two new deactivation runs with carbon supported catalysts have been completed, and a brief process variable study was conducted with Amocat 1A to supplement the earlier kinetics run BMC10. While the batch reactor tests of several catalyst preparations appear promising, none of the catalysts tested thus far in the continuous unit have achieved the benchmark performance established by Amocat 1A. 10 refs., 14 figs., 33 tabs.
