Population kinetics of atomic-sodium states in a gas-discharge plasma in an Na--Ne--H/sub 2/ mixture

By simultaneously taking into account collisional--radiative processes and ion--ion recombination, based on the theory of modified diffusion approximation, a calculation has been carried out of the populations of excited states of the sodium atom in a pulsed-discharge plasma in an Na--Ne--H/sub 2/ mixture. The conditions for satisfying the inversion formation criterion at the 4s--3p transition of the sodium atom were analyzed and the corresponding plasma parameters were calculated. It has been shown that in the lasing regime, the calculated values of inversion ..delta..N agree well with the experimentally measured values, and the time dependence ..delta..N(t) with the form of the experimentally obtained lasing pulse. It has been shown that under the conditions for the existence of lasing with respect to the sodium component, the recombination character of the disequilibrium is realized. It has been established that a laser at the 4s--3p transition of the sodium atom belongs to a special type of plasma lasers which work at the stage of pulse passage. Such lasers are called recombination electrodischarge lasers.
