Rockerarm system for controlling valves in an internal combustion engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5247984
A rocker arm system is described for an internal combustion engine, comprising, in combination, at least one engine unit including a cylinder block having a top side and an opposed bottom side and a side wall extending between the top and bottom sides, a cylinder head mounted to the top side of the cylinder block, valve means seated in and operatively connected to the cylinder head and movable between open and closed positions, the valve means including biasing means for moving the valve means from the open position to the closed position, the valve means including a valve stem; cam means positioned proximate to the side wall of the cylinder block, arm means rotatably connected to the side wall of the cylinder block and extending between and operatively positioned relative to the cam means and the valve means, the arm means being movable between first and second positions, wherein the first position the arm means is free of pressure contact with the cam means and the valve means, and in the second position the arm means is in pressure contact with the cam means and with the valve means wherein the valve means has been moved to the open position by the arm means; mounting means secured to the side wall of the cylinder block for rotatably connecting the arm means to the cylinder block for movement between the first and second positions, a crankshaft driven by the piston of the cylinder block positioned proximate to the bottom side of the cylinder block, gearing means associated with the crankshaft and with the crankshaft for moving the cam means between the first and second positions so as to operate the arm means and the valve means in timed sequence for operation of the engine.
