The influence of oxygen deficiency on the superconductivity and the thermoelectric power in the single phase YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} system has been studied. The results show that the superconducting transition temperature decreases, and the magnitude of the thermoelectric power increases with an increase in the number of oxygen vacancies. According to the experimental results we suggest that hole conduction is predominant in the single phase YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} system, and the relatively large phonon-drag thermopower indicates that there exists strong electron-phonon interaction in the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} superconductor.
