With an annual output of 800,000 t, Ukrainian plants produce 5 types of electrode pitch differing in softening point, volatile matter and group content. All the plants produce tars containing elevated amounts of alpha-1 fraction, the quinoline insolubles, mainly due to incorrect charging and rabbling, as well as oven age. Increasing the blending of charges and the gas coal content have also contributed. At Makeevka, the pitch product is run off from the vat base and the vat is fitted with an external expander to draw off vapours and increase the reaction space. Off-vapours are used to heat air which is injected into the vat as a bubbling agent to increase pitch output.
