Two theories with spontaneously broken symmetries are constructed and analyzed. In the first, a new mechanism for CP violation is proposed and an SU(5) model which incorporates the mechanism is considered in detail. In the second, a minimal extension of the Standard Model is given in which baryogenesis follows the weak phase transition and the baryon-to-entropy ratio is calculable entirely in terms of measurable parameters. Finally, the theory of the effective potential is carefully examined and the apparent conflict between perturbation theory and the convexity of the effective potential is resolved.
