  1. Elliott Turbomachinery Ltd., Basingstoke (England)
In former days overhauls were carried out almost universally by the in-house resources available to an operation. However, the changing economic climate has induced more and more clients to consider buying a lump-sum overhaul from a qualified vendor. The book In Search of Excellence described a characteristic called sticking to the knitting. This means that refineries that are expert at breaking down petroleum are concentrating on doing just that. Fertilizer makers want to make fertilizers - not machinery. Those who are expert at recombining chemical molecules into ethylene want to do that job. They do not want to learn machine maintenance. Turbomachinery makers like Elliott know how to overhaul machinery and do not want to make petrol, ammonia, ethylene or anything else that their customers make. A lump sum, fixed price, Total Turbomachinery Overhaul Project Approach can bring about substantial cost savings both in disbursed cash and internal expense.
