Title: Ultrasonic instrument to measure the gas velocity and/or the solids loading in a flowing gas stream

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5242223

An instrument for measuring the mass flow rate of solids suspended in a gas being transported through a conduit is described comprising: transmitter means for generating packets of ultrasound energy, receiver means for detecting the signal strength of the packets of ultrasound energy, the receiver means spaced from the transmitter means such that the ultrasound packets travel across the conduit, and the signal strength is influenced by the concentration of the solids and the velocity of the gas in the conduit, variable positioning means for changing the relationship between the transmitter means and the receiver means in a manner that enables sensing of the downstream drift of the ultrasound packets whereby the velocity of heat gas in the conduit may be determined, gated peak analyzer means for determining a maximum signal strength value or an individual packet of the ultrasound energy; controlling and processing means for setting the relationship between the transmitter means and the receiver means at first relationship.
