A theory is worked out for an electrodeless discharge sustained in an insulated volume within a plane capacitor by a variable field applied to the capacitor plates. Detailed calculations are carried out for experiments with capacitive pulses at a high repetition frequency, described in part I of this paper. These capacitive pulses are used to stabilize a dc discharge in a closed-loop CO/sub 2/ laser. A self-sustained rf capacitive discharge is also examined.
