The compendium of the Department's activities regarding the health matters covered by the Act includes the research and implementation activities performed under contracts and grants which were the responsibility of the Bureau of Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH). These extramural activities are described under applicable topics throughout the report. Medical examination of coal miners, physician training seminars, transfer of miners with coal workers' pneumoconiosis to less dusty areas, and autopsy program activities are highlighted in section two. Section three deals with the applied medical research program activities under the Act. The following sections review the BOSH research programs for health standards setting and criteria development, including: mandatory health standards and interim standard reduction schedule; dust sampling, both instrumentation and methodology development; respirable dust exposure standards; respiratory protective devices; emergency medical assistance, potable water, and sanitation; noise standards; and a brief summary of the health related activities of the Interim Compliance Panel. The last section summarizes the health program costs and projections, including estimated funding requirements through FY 1972. Appendices, based on work accomplished during calendar year 1970, include: bibliography of all publications resulting from the current research activities within BOSH on medical and industrial hygiene research related to the occupational diseases of miners; a list of all contracts, grants, and PL-480 research agreements as of December 31, 1970; published rule making; and published proposed mandatory health standards.
