Note on the lichens and bryophytes of the Wyre Forest

The Wyre Forest has a poorly developed lichen flora. There appear to be two main possible explanations, and it seems that both may contribute to the paucity of the corticolous lichen flora. The forest was managed for centuries as oak-coppice, to supply charcoal for the industries of the Midlands, and there are few very large trees, except in steep ravines. The shortage of old trees may therefore be one factor contributing to the paucity of the lichen flora. Also, the forest lies only four to eight miles west of Kidderminster, a town with considerable industrial development, and more significantly, only 10-12 miles west of the edge of the Birmingham and Wolverhampton industrial conurbation, which at times must produce fairly high concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the forest atmosphere. This is probably the most significant factor affecting the corticolous lichen flora. 10 references.
