Coal firing technology for side-and top-fired tunnel kilns

The use of granulated coal in an existing tunnel kiln specifically designed for either liquid or gaseous fuels is studied. At first, it was difficult to deliver the correct amount of properly sized coal at the right velocity to a large number of small volume fuel delivery points. Large volume single injectors were totally unsuitable to the kiln. In 1974 the ''solid fuel metering and delivery system'' was developed by General Shale. This system was capable of metering and delivering small quantities of granulated coal at a proper feed rate into the kiln (as schematicized). The firing of brick with coal increases efficiency by 30%. More favorable hydrogen loss factor, improved recirculation of heat, reduction of excess air temperatures, and favorable heat release profile are cited as reasons.
